Listening is a learned skill which takes lots of practice, I find. Being present in the moment is key. So I ask myself, am I thinking about what I want to say next? Am I so excited (because I encountered a similar experience) that I cannot wait to fully listen till the other person is finished talking before I share my own experience?
While sharing adventures with a friend, this jumping around probably won’t do any harm and can even be fun, but when the other person is upset and is trying to share something that is very charged, it might be best to take a deep breath and just be there. You might just hear something that you otherwise would have missed.
Well said.
